The Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Pathology of Federal University of Bahia under authorization by the higher instances of this University and in the use of its legal attributions, hereby makes public to the interested parties that the inscriptions are open for the selection to the entrance in the Program of Masters’ and Doctoral level, Stricto sensu, in the second semester of 2016, on the dates and other conditions specified in this Edict.
- INSTITUTIONAL ASPECTS
1.1. BRIEF HISTORY
The Postgraduate Course in Pathology (PGPAT) was implemented at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) in 1972 as a Master’s Degree in Human Pathology. It was complemented with a Ph.D. in 1989. The success of the course can be attributed to the fact that it was implanted by a group of excellence in Pathology that worked in Pathological Anatomy Service of the University Hospital Professor Edgard Santos (UFBA). The School of Pathology of Bahia had in this postgraduate course an important role in the training of pathologists focused on the areas of research and teaching. Since its first evaluation by CAPES the course has obtained concept “A”. With the new evaluation system, the course is with concept 6.
PGPAT is localized at the Gonçalo Moniz Research Institute (IGM), one of the most productive units of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. The course also maintains its strong link with UFBA. In this way the PGPAT constitutes an important nucleus of scientific production and researchers training. Many of their students became actors of the expansion of IGM contributing to its current dimension. Pathology professors and researchers trained in this course are now spread across several universities and research institutes in the country.
1.2. STRUCTURE SUMMARY
The course consists of two main areas:
– Human Pathology
The axis of Human Pathology is restricted to Physicians with Residency in Pathological Anatomy. The axis of Experimental Pathology is open to graduates in biomedical area and the specialization in Pathological Anatomy is not being necessary.
The proposal from Graduate Programs is related to develop Researchers who has to conduct their research with high quality once it is essential for the good performance of university education and for the public health program. The aim of the Master’s Degree course is to accumulate general knowledge of the activity’s area of the course to deepen the knowledge in specific fields where it operates, as well as the practical exposure to scientific methods through the execution of experiments necessary for the conclusion work. In this perspective the Master’s degree has a dual function: to prepare students for the next stage of scientific formation and for the teaching practice.
The Doctorate is seen as the stage of formation of an independent researcher. Such training is given by the work of a researcher already trained where dedication, independent study and specific work are more important than teaching disciplines.
